To assure that low-to-moderate income first-time homeowners, many who have lived in apartments most of their lives, can meet the demands of not only owning, but maintaining their homes, Jubilee Homes, Hechinger’s, H.O.M.E. Headquarters, M&T Bank and the City of Syracuse teamed up to develop “The Handy Homeowner Course,” a four (4) week Training program developed to give low- to –moderate income homeowners “a positive attitude about maintaining their own homes”, and imparting in them the skills and knowledge necessary to do just that. This program is generously sponsored by the City of Syracuse, Home Headquarters, Inc., M&T Bank, and Partners Trust Bank.
Using the objectives of a similar program developed by a Neighborhood Works Organization, Neighborhood Housing Services of Bedford- Stuyvesant, the goals of the “Home Homeowners Course”:
To increase homeowner’s knowledge and use of basic tools and materials;
To teach homeowners how to perform basic repairs and maintenance tasks;
To help home owners develop positive attitudes in negotiating with, and supervising professional building contractors; and
To increase homeowners’ ability to upgrade and maintain their property and improve the quality of community life.
Taught by professionals in the field, this in-depth, hands-on training encompasses basic home repairs; painting; drywall; floor coverings; plumbing, heating and electrical; interior and exterior maintenance. To encourage parents to attend, particularly single mothers, daycare is provided free of charge to participants as well as food and refreshments. At the end of the program, participants receive a certificate of completion and a gift card.
